Joan Agwafu Azongwa,Midwife at the female Gynecological Unit of the Regional Hospital in Bamenda has invited Midwives to uphold the values of the profession.
She made the call Friday May 5,2023 during activities to celebrate International Midwives Day with the theme: Together Again, From Evidence To Reality.
"Prospective midwives should have an understanding and caring attitude, an ability to get on well with people from a wide range of backgrounds and good observers. They should learn to teach and uphold the midwifery profession to standards and should not be money minded,"said madam Joan.
She also pointed out that the day is so important because it reminds the world about the female body and it's ability to bring forth children,
"The day seeks to remind us that the female body is perfectly capable of giving birth and carrying a child to term without some of the methods employed by obstetrics and other practitioners such as Laparoscopic surgery, hysteroscopy",
Mdm Joan said before continuing that,
"Midwives go as far as caring for women after birth including breastfeeding, gynecological examination, new born care, assistance in family planning decisions, pre conception care as well as menopausal management."
A student of Nursing and Midwifery of the Faculty of Health Science,University of Bamenda,Melisa-Bright Nyukun explained what she is aiming at as a future Midwife,
"My goal is to be a midwife with a difference, bringing in new ideas and seeing how we can put in place those new ideas in order to have outstanding services. To see how I can be of help even in the community and assist those that might be in need of such services and to see that these services of delivery are being subsidized to the level which everybody can afford it".
To her mates, she advised that they should stay focused on their ambition of becoming midwives.
"It is a profession of prestige and as such, they are like vessels used to bring new borns into the world," she indicated.
A nurse who wanted to be identified only as Larrisa intimated that,
"I aspire to aid women who need support, care and advice during pregnancy. Labour and postpartum period( period after delivery), to provide care for the new born baby and the infant. All midwives should be passionate and committed to their work and learn to care for one another."
It should be noted that, the International Day of the Midwife is a day set aside to celebrate the impact midwives are making in the world today in the area of safe delivery for women.
