CBCHS, Stakeholders Strategize To Increase Learners With Disabilities In Schools
Increasing the enrollment of learners with disabilities in schools and how it can be achieved were top on the agenda at a brief orientation meeting organized by the Communuity Based Rehabilitation (CBR) center of the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Services (CBCHS).
The meeting that brought together the Media, religious leaders, CBR field workers amongst others was to brainstorm on how best, messages geared towards encouraging school enrollment for children with disabilities in schools during the 2022/2023 academic year can better be disseminated.
It was revealed during the orientation meeting that many schools in Mezam Divison have shown interest in Inclusive Education and those that were operating as mainstream learning centers will begin this academic year as inclusive schools.
As pointed out by the project coordinator, Ndintek Kennedy Nonki, Radio stations, CBR field workers, Church leaders and many others have been called to escalate the awareness level on Inclusive Education,
"The idea is for Community Based field workers to visit churches around town in especially in Mezam Division and spread the message on inclusive education," Said Ndintek who added that,
"Education empowers people with disabilities and builds dignity in them. When people can read, write and communicate well thanks to education, they can have good jobs or create jobs and live a life of dignity. Stigma will best be handled if education is the order of the day. "
The project coordinator also indicated that inclusive education will give room for children with disabilities to study in the Same settings like their peers.
He explained that sending them to specific schools where only children with disabilities study can breed in some form of stigma and marginalization where they will feel they don't belong to society. He said this can only be fixed if the children are allowed to mingle and play with other children.
The population has been invited not to keep children with disabilities at home but help them acquire education by referring them to the CBCHS where they can get some help.
Keep up the good work
