World Nurses Day: Student Nurses Table Challenges Faced

 By Fozao Vaniela

Student Nurses in the crisis hit Northwest Region say their activities are being perturbed by the current socio political crisis rocking the two restive regions of Cameroon among other challenges.

They say they feel bad especially when on internship because at the end of the day, they don't learn anything because their supervisors are not always friendly and unwilling to corporate with them. Some even complained about the attitude of some of those assigned to work with them.

The students disclosed all  these and many others during the nurses week which was part of activities to mark the International Day of Nurses.

According to Melissa-Bright, a level 200 nursing and mid- wivery student of the University of Bamenda UBa, the challenges start from the campus,

"The faculty of health sciences lacks enough lecture halls. Most of the time we come to school and return home without lectures because of lack of halls. Insecurity too has dealt a heavy blow to studies as both the students and lecturers are not spared."

On her part, Brina of National Polytechnic Institute said, "the number of nurses we are assigned to work with are never enough. I once worked with a single nurse on duty and on that day, five women in labour came and it was not easy on us."

Those who spoke to us off records raised the issue of inadequate machines at the Regional Hospital in Bamenda. We contacted Nurse Jam Emile who explained that,

"The machines are there but we lack trained pesonel to man them."

Student Nurses have also invited the Medical family in Bamenda and the Northwest Region as a whole to look in to the challenges raised and see what can be done to arrest the situation.
